Product Overview
Powered by the Celeron N3060 (Braswell) dual core processor, the Extensa is sufficient for office and Internet applications. The processor clocks at up to 2.16 GHz. The Braswell processor works at full speed in both mains and battery operation. The Extensa performs better than comparably Bay Trail notebooks, since the GPUs of the Braswell generations are significantly faster than their predecessors. It is possible to increase the system performance of the Extensa by replacing the hard drive with an SSD.
Display Features
Acer has equipped the Extensa with a matte 15.6-inch display with a native resolution of 1366×768 pixels. Brightness (230.9 cd/m²) and contrast (388:1) are quite low. However, these values are acceptable in view of the computer’s price range. The frequency of 990 Hz is quite high, so most users sensitive to PWM should not notice any flickering.
Build and Design
The all-plastic case is matt plastic top to bottom, with a light texturing to help with purchase when handling. At 2.2kg weight and just over 26mm thick, but about average for the traditional class of 15in-screen general-purpose laptops. Most of the ports are ranged along the back below the screen hinge – power inlet, audio headset, HDMI and ethernet, plus one each USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports. On the left side is an SD card slot and another USB 2.0, while the right side is host to the increasingly rare tray-load DVD drive. Like most such mechanisms today it can write to dual-layer DVD±RW discs.
Input Devices
The keyboard-plus-numberpad stretches across the top deck of the Extensa, with deeply sprung tiled keys that proved excellent for easy typing. The trackpad was nearly unusuable however, thanks to a broken right-click button that clunked on each press. It’s a large component at 106 x 78mm, and buttonless to follow the current fashion even if real buttons work better on low-grade trackpads fitted to cheaper laptops.
Everlasting Memories
The Extensa packs an M-DISC™ Ready Drive that can preserve your precious data for centuries on M-DISC™ media. Students with homework papers, parents with family photos or financial documents, and anyone with irreplaceable files will appreciate peace of mind from knowing that personal information and priceless memories are safe.
